The
Mediterranean Gardener
This volume reveals the extraordinarily rich diversity
of trees, shrubs, flowering plants and cacti that will flourish
in regions where summers are hot and dry, and the winters mild
and wet. There are descriptions of more than 300 plants, most
of them readily obtainable: Chinaberry trees with fragrant lilac
flowers in spring, dark green twisted carobs, and beautiful red-flowered
climbing lilies. Many of the subjects are illustrated in colour
photographs. Coded information at the start of each entry should
enable gardeners to make the best choices when confronted with
the bewildering array of plants on offer. Hugh Latymer also offers
a variety of garden designs, always encouraging imaginative solutions.
He draws on 20 years of gardening experience on the island of
Mallorca. Read

Gardening
in Spain
Very useful in dealing with the problems of gardening
in a hot and dry climate. It is very well put together, with separate
chapters covering the basic ideals of gardening, tips for absentee-owners,
gardens by the sea, gardening for the disabled, among others.
It describes the plants that will thrive in the Mediterranean
climate, and how to deal with them on a day-to-day basis. All
in all, a very practical book packed with advice, not glossy photos.

Mediterranean
Gardening: A Waterwise Approach
"Traditional", i.e. northern European, gardening just
doesn't work in countries with long dry summers. The author does
a great job in explaining the principles and constraints applicable
to dry climate gardening in the first half of the book. Lots of
practical detail shows that she has done it all herself, many
times over. The second half is a nice compendium of plants from
Mediterranean climates from all over the world. Highly recommended.

Finca:
Renovating an Old Farmhouse in Spain
Finca: Renovating an Old Farmhouse in Spain is exceptional. The
practicalities and real life experiences described of renovating
an old traditional property, beamed ceilings, white detached farmhouse,
olive grove and wonderful scenery. The author has managed a major
renovation project, day to day problems with Spanish rural building
and life very skillfully. The author and his wife have usefully
documented their experiences and provided a hugely informative
book on all aspects of renovation and living in the "campo".
