Swamp
Wattle
Acacia
retinodes
Spanish: Mimosa*
Height: 10 m
Spread: 10 m
Introduced from Australia
this tree has naturalised throughout the South of Spain, and is
regarded as a weed in some places.
It is a small tree with upward-spreading
branches and has a fast rate of growth. The leaves are long and
narrow and its small yellow flowers are borne in clusters along
the branches. Flowering is in March/April
One of the main problems with
this tree is that it requires very little water, and in wet winters
it grows very quickly. This results in weak branching which often
leads to sections of the crown collapsing, especially in windy
conditions.
*There are several trees of
the Acacia family which get called Mimosa. Acacia dealbata is
the true Mimosa.
This particular specimen was
photographed at the front of the Los Hidalgos urbanisation.
