Carob
Ceratonia
siliqua
Spanish: Algarrobo
Height: 8-10 m
Spread: 10 m
Also known as St. John's Bread
or the Locust Bean, this tree's pods can be roasted and ground
to produce a chocolate substitute (who are they kidding!)
This tree is native to this
region and can be found growing throughout the campo, the seed
pods were often used as a fodder supplement for domestic animals
and also for humans in lean years.
The tree likes well drained
rocky or sandy soils, and can often be found clinging on to rock
faces.
This is not a particularly
good garden tree as the roots can be quite invasive. This specimen
is in the Los Tabanos area of Manilva.
