Desert Fan Palm

Desert Fan PalmWashingtonia filifera
Spanish: Palmera

Height: 20 m
Spread: 5 m

These elegant palm trees grow particularly well in coastal regions, and are resistant to the strong salt laden winds, and will even grow on the beach.

They like a well-drained soil and well grow quickly if regularly watered.

They transplant well and large specimens can be purchased which add instant maturity to any new garden. Palms are best transplanted during the summer and should be planted a metre deeper than before they were dug up to enable new roots to form. Newly-transplanted palms should be staked or guyed securely to prvent the new, fleshy roots being rubbed off by windrock.

The Palms are monocotyledons and grow from a central growing point and the leaves droop down as they age eventually to form a dry thatch of dead leaves which can be left or trimmed off depending on your preference.

This specimen can be found on the harbourside in Puerto de la Duquesa.
