Manilva Cycling Club becomes a reality

Manilva Cycling Club

A group of cycling enthusiasts in Manilva have formed the Club Ciclista de Manilva with the object of developing this popular sport in the municipality and representing Manilva in various events and competitions at provincial level. There are also plans to organise a local ‘Bicycle Day’ along with other events.

Talk on the sinking of the HMS Ark Royal

Manilva's Youth Department, headed by Councillor Marcos Ruiz, has organised a talk on the subject of the British Royal Navy aircraft Carrier HMS Ark Royal which was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of Manilva 70 years ago during WWII.

Local resident and professional diver, Damian Gonzalez, has spent a number of years researching the sinking and investigating the location of the wreck of this historic ship and will present his findings at the Edificio Usos Multiples in Sabinillas on Friday 18 November from 6.30 pm.

The talk will be in Spanish.

 
Coasts Authority finally declares Paseo Maritimo in Sabinillas legal

The Spanish Environment Ministry's Coasts Department has finally declared that the Paseo Maritimo promenade in Sabinillas is legal. This resolution comes after some 20 years of legal wrangling, and now paves the way for construction of the final stretch between the school and La Colonia.

Local mystery writers strike again!

The Pearls of Tangiers

Mary Chiappe, twenty-two years resident in Manilva, began with a witty autobiography, ‘The Grapes of Warmth’ – about settling in this area, now sadly out of print – and moved to co-authoring a historical whodunit series set in Gibraltar. She writes with a childhood friend, Sam Benady, who is a retired paediatrician and amateur historian. An ancestor of his was kidnapped by pirates off this very coast of ours – near la Torre de la Sal - and had to be ransomed by the Consul in Malaga! Mary says her family were not worth kidnapping – ‘Peasants, a cobbler and one gypsy in my ancestry were not abductable material!’
