Protest
Written by El Duque
Thursday, 28 July 2011 15:55

Local residents will be holding a protest this evening in response to the death of a young girl yesterday.
The ten year old from Seville was on holiday here with her family when she was taken ill on the beach in Sabinillas. Despite efforts by medics the young girl unfortunately died.
This tragedy has brought to light the woeful level of emergency cover which exists in Manilva, particularly during the summer when the population more than triples, despite repeated demands by the local authorities for the Junta de Andalucia's health service to address the need for 24-hour emergency cover which was originally promised as part of the Sabinillas Health Centre's facilities.
The protest will take place at 8 pm in  Avenida de la Constitución, by the car parks at the La Colonia end of Sabinillas.

Local mystery writers strike again!

The Pearls of Tangiers

Mary Chiappe, twenty-two years resident in Manilva, began with a witty autobiography, ‘The Grapes of Warmth’ – about settling in this area, now sadly out of print – and moved to co-authoring a historical whodunit series set in Gibraltar. She writes with a childhood friend, Sam Benady, who is a retired paediatrician and amateur historian. An ancestor of his was kidnapped by pirates off this very coast of ours – near la Torre de la Sal - and had to be ransomed by the Consul in Malaga! Mary says her family were not worth kidnapping – ‘Peasants, a cobbler and one gypsy in my ancestry were not abductable material!’
