Thanks to an agreement between Manilva's Tourism Department, headed by Emilio López Berenguer and the Benalmadena Classic Car Club, Sunday July 17 will see Manilva host the I Classic Car Rally. Beginning at 10.30 am the club will exhibit its collection of classic cars at a number of points in the municipality beginning in Castillo de la Duquesa with a civic reception after which the vehicles will parade in convoy through Sabinillas, before heading up to Manilva where they will display in Calle Mar giving residents the opportunity to see up close these automotive gems. The event will finish up in Duquesa Port where the collection can be viewed around the harbourside. Manilva's Tourism Department has announced that this is just one of a number of events designed to raise the profile of Manilva and to provide attractions for both visitors and residents alike. |

Tomorrow, June 11 at midday, town council meetings will be held throughout Spain with the aim of selecting the mayor and determining the composition of the municipal government for the coming four years.
In many municipalities where a particular party gained the majority, like Estepona for instance where the Partido Popular gained 17 of the 25 available seats, this is a mere formality. Elsewhere where there was no clear majority then tomorrow's selection will be the result of negotiations for the formation of coalitions and pacts.
Manilva is a case of the latter, with the Izquierda Unida just falling short of the majority with 8 out of the 17 seats. In an unusual move the three defeated parties attempted to put together a tripartite coalition with the aim of denying IU the opportunity to form a government, whilst not unheard of it would have meant three parties with quite serious differences both politically and personally reaching an agreement. Not surprisingly negotiations broke down at the last minute, and it was announced last night that Emilio Berenguer's ASM party, which gained two seats, will be forming a coalition with IU providing a clear working majority of 10 councillors to 7 in opposition.
Barring last minute developments (a phrase concerning counting chickens springs to mind) then we should see Antonia Muñoz invested as Mayor for a second consecutive term at the Plenary Session tomorrow. |

The Izquierda Unida, led by Antonia Muñoz, have won the local elections held in Manilva on Sunday 22 May, gaining 8 seats on the council, 3 more than in 2007. These seats have been taken at the expense of the Partido Popular who gained 3 seats, 1 less than in 2007, and Emilio Lopez Berenguer's ASM Party which only managed 2 seats this year, 2 less than in 2007. The PSOE, under Salvador Zotano, bucked the trend in the rest of the country where the governing PSOE generally took a good kicking, by maintaining their 4 seats on the Manilva council.
The breakdown of the votes is as follows: Izquierda Unida: 1908 votes - 8 seats PSOE: 1065 votes - 4 seats Partido Popular: 872 votes - 3 seats ASM: 639 votes - 2 seats UDM: 198 votes MSI: 168 votes Partido Andalucista: 152 votes
Although just short of an absolute majority the IU will look to form a coalition with one of the other parties.

Mary Chiappe, twenty-two years resident in Manilva, began with a witty autobiography, ‘The Grapes of Warmth’ – about settling in this area, now sadly out of print – and moved to co-authoring a historical whodunit series set in Gibraltar. She writes with a childhood friend, Sam Benady, who is a retired paediatrician and amateur historian. An ancestor of his was kidnapped by pirates off this very coast of ours – near la Torre de la Sal - and had to be ransomed by the Consul in Malaga! Mary says her family were not worth kidnapping – ‘Peasants, a cobbler and one gypsy in my ancestry were not abductable material!’
