Peñoncillo road to reopen to traffic in the coming weeks
Written by El Duque
Tuesday, 04 January 2011 09:36

After over three years it is hoped that the Carretera del Peñoncillo road will be reopened to traffic this month.

This important traffic artery connecting the coast road with Manilva and the Instituto Las Viñas secondary school has been closed since October 2007 whilst improvement works were carried out to widen the road and install footpaths, etc.

The original plan foresaw a dual carriageway for the entire length of the road, but difficulties with the terrain has meant that the last stretch adjacent to the school entrance will remain single carriageway.

Local mystery writers strike again!

The Pearls of Tangiers

Mary Chiappe, twenty-two years resident in Manilva, began with a witty autobiography, ‘The Grapes of Warmth’ – about settling in this area, now sadly out of print – and moved to co-authoring a historical whodunit series set in Gibraltar. She writes with a childhood friend, Sam Benady, who is a retired paediatrician and amateur historian. An ancestor of his was kidnapped by pirates off this very coast of ours – near la Torre de la Sal - and had to be ransomed by the Consul in Malaga! Mary says her family were not worth kidnapping – ‘Peasants, a cobbler and one gypsy in my ancestry were not abductable material!’
