This week has once again seen the Costa del Sol lashed by torrential rain leading to flooding, landslides and widespread disruption.
With around 100 litres per square metre (almost 4 inches) falling in just a few hours on ground already saturated after two months of almost continuous rain, flooding was inevitable. Manilva was particularly hard hit with the Sabinillas underpass closed for several hours on Monday, 15th due to flooding. Maicandil school primary school was also closed, as flood water poured through the building.
The Rio Manilva burst its banks bringing down a electricity pylon and damaging the bridge by the Recinto Ferial. The local fire service was kept busy pumping out basements and underground car parks in the village as residents cleared up after flood waters had subsided. A combination of run off from the storms and heavy seas have seriously damaged the beaches, and a freak wave took out one of the beacons on the Puerto de la Duquesa's sea wall. The forecast is for more heavy rain later in the week!
